He is my half at this time...

We've met in Tete - at work :-). He actually works with me at the same Company, same room and we have same Boss. Can you believe it :-)?
I started working in this Coal Project in 2008 but he only started in 2011, I mean 6 months ago. Funny when my colleague introduced him as the new Logistics Controller, I thought...one more coming from Brasil. I confess that at the moment I am not a big fun of Brasil :-( and this feeling made me not even look at him nicelly.

Days have passed and he was nice to everyone, I mean, he smiled and had this different behavior. Guys from Brasil, not saying all of them, but most of them are kinda have the feeling that they are "the cute ones"...lol....,,, and they are not!!!
So lets see how is this relationship is going to look look like in the coming days, weeks, months or years. --------You know what? I am happy today :-).

A Gift that you give and receive - A bit about my experiences as a volunteer

After years without thinking about it I learned that little things can make a difference and can really change some people's life!

Today I have this special feeling that I can give a small piece of what I have to someone who has got nothing or someone in a need of a change. But this peace doesn't always have to be money, clothes, food but also a smile, a touch, an idea or even a word of positiveness.

How do you volunteer in Mozambique or how do you learn to be a volunteer in Mozambique? Almost impossible. My mom is a volunteer and she is one in 1000 in Mozambique. She's got a small house that she have built for some kids from the street in Quelimane. Quelimane is in North of Mozambique where my mom lives. She always worked and had enough money to raise 7 kids and also enough to have a pretty good life however, my mom and dad were educated in the catholic church and they had this habit of not spending so much money with us because the world is different outside and we couldn't be so privileged than others.

So, going back when questioning how you learn to be a volunteer in Mozambique – I think is quite difficult as there are more poor people than the opposite. Of course there are more reasons, like some youths just thinking about themselves, Business churches stealing money from people instead of teaching them the word "sharing", people who didn't learn to stand up and make a diference or be counted, people who don't like to be challenged, etc. But I understand - I fell like I was also like them before participating in this exchange programs. I guess first thing we need is motivation but before that there are important steps to happen in your life like participating in an exchange program, see others and start doing in your home or community or look at yourself as someone with the capacity to do somenthing for someone and for the world. But let’s go years back and I will tell you what happened to me.

My surprise, I was told by a cousin that there was a Canadian volunteer program about to start and they were searching for volunteers. At that time I didn’t think about volunteering but I thought about getting out of my life a little bit as I wasn’t happy at all. I wasn’t staying with my parents anymore and they completely stopped sending me money. This was their behavior cause I decided not to go back home anymore. I had a job at that time but decided to fly to this adventure. Did not say anything to my parents and left to Canada. That was the beginning of a beautiful change in my life.

Bellow - planting threes in Manhiça - Mozambique

I started giving my time and my energy to this new situation. I have done the first program in Canada and Cape Town. It was somehow scary at the beginnig for sure as the environment was different, I was surrounded by strange people and following lots of procedures. I also had to learn about not expecting a salary at the end of the month.

How do you survive with no money? I had a host family, a work placement and some cash every week just to buy snacks and a few cafes at the café bar.  I had a reason for doing this – I wanted to forget about my life and I wanted to enjoy the opportunity of helping and having fun at the same time.

It's definitely overwhelming to see a satisfation face just because you've done something so small to somebody. My first work placemnt was working with kids at the libray in the morning and doing meals on wills in the afternoon. Meals on wills was working with very old people who cannot go out of their homes. I had to pick up their food and deliver at their houses.

Ups, bellow, we were in Manhiça distributing books when the car had a problem - It was funny, the girls were just watching and taking pictures of corse.

Smiling after that problem :-). Now lets move on and see the smile of the kids from that region.

This is the welcome - lots of kids happy to receive their books

I met this enthusiastic  woman when delivering her food, she was very very old and she told me that it was the first time she saw a black girl so close to her. I started smiling when going to her kitchen and putting her food in a plate. She liked to talk about her stories . My english was so bad at that time but I had to seat down for at least 15 minutes cause I knew she would feel happy to tell me those stories. She was really a funny human and seemed to have a busy life before.

I kept wondering how that people can still smile being so lonely and depending on someone to bring them food every day. I thought, at least they have food and a nice apartment comparing to what at see back home.

My work at the library was fun, lots of good stories. The crazy thing was talking with the kids, they spoke good english and I did not. How would I read stories and help them? It was really fun surviving in that situation. The best part was receiving many post cards disigned by each of them when I was coming back home.

Ups, a bit of hard work in a Priest home in Canada

The next 3 years were also volunteering but this time I was a Project Supervisor so things were very different. You volunteer and you also have to take care of 20 people from different countries. Nothing that I thought I would be doing in my life so I had to be like a mom and make my participants follow procedures, respect the communities and see how important they are by leaving all their lives to help others.

I had to stop volunteering unfortunately - I wish I could continue but I also need to help myself buy working and having some money. But I am very happy for the time I spent  with all the volunteers in differents communities, all the host families, all the lessons I had about life and sharing with others.

It really make's you feel a better person when you see these smiles. This kids are not asking for money on the streets, they were helping us distributing the books in a School.

Warm hugs to everyone who helped and participated in my life when volunteering.

Great Adventure in Zambia - May 2011

Me and 12 colleagues decided to spend a long weekend in Zambia. We´ve rented 3 vehicles 4x4´s and left home around 3:30am - we were very excited but also very sleepy. The plan was to arrive at the Border before 6 am. Its about 3 hours to get there and we fortunately arrived safe and ready to cross the border. We took more than 2 hours at the Zambia side border cause the service there was like 10 stars or more. It wasn´t good at all and I hope it gets better when I go back next time. I think the big problem was because they are not used to see so many people crossing the border at the same time specially early in the morning? We were a team of 13 people but there were other colleagues also going to Zambia but staying in different Lodges in the park. The road is ok but before getting to the park we found a 200 km or more of really bad road. You take hours to get into the park and you have to prepare yourself for the very bad road. You can´t sleep, you don´t feel confortable in the car and you arrive completely broke.  Take a look at the bad road picture , however with a beautiful view. We were close to the park and found another beautiful view - it was a huge river. You start feeling better and excited. Five minutes later we were in the South Luangwa Park. Uf, that was the best part - getting there.

The Lodge was EXPENSIVE but definitelly we did not expect a 5 stars service like that in everything. Ups, no, except the food. Oh dear, the food wasn´t good - completely different from our cultures. In our group we had two Mozambicans, Brazilians, one Portuguese and one colombian. We all didn´t like the food at all but we had to survise with that for 3 long days. They have a SPA at the Lodge so I guess that food is for people who stay in the park to lose weight or something? And you cant even take your food from home cause you don´t have a fridge in your room. Oh by the way, there are no aircons but you´ll not even think about it cause the wether is nice.

See the Welcome bellow - that´s my best picture from this adventure I think. The Impalas are what they most have in the Park. Everywere in the park or before getting there you can see lots of them. I just loved them and took lots of pictures. My friends laughed so much because I took so many pictures of them and they were always saying: aren´t you tired to take so many pics of the Impalas :-)?

Unfortunately life is not just fun and relaxing for the animals there. No rules between some animals I guess. During the safari we saw a dead Zebra on the floor and the Lions eating her meat. Its something we didn´t expect to see ever. It´s also something we will never forget. It was to sad to see that view.

The safari continued and more animals on the way posing for the pictures. Zebras, lions, hipos, thousands of monkeys, etc, we could see all of them.

Funny when I was young my colleages used to call me girafe so that was my chance to take a picture with my friend girafe :-). They are so pretty.

The feeling changes when is about to smile and take a picture in fornt of lions. We were driving around when we saw 6 or more leos relaxing in the middle of the road. They looked tired and full, probably from eating the Zebra last night. It was so scary the guy from the Lodge stopped the car for very long time and we couldn´t even move or talk loud. It was scary but somehow very interesting to see it. I was born in July 23rd, so I am Leo and was quite a pleasure to see a Leo in front of me.

Good bye Zebras :). They are so elegant - both walking around toguether.

Oh, I can´t forget to tell you what we found when driving back home. A group of muslim guys praying at the border. Why will they pray at the border? We don't know - we couldn´t ask them. What we know is that more than 20% of the population in zambia is muslim and the rest are catholic or belongs to african religions.

Warm Hugs to Zambia - will definitely go back one day!

The Country of Paella - Spain March 2011

Paella is the traditional dish in Spain made with rice, green vegetables and meat or seafood. Most of their food are taken from the mediterranean surrounding the country.

I spent two weeks in that wonderful country with so many things to do and so many places to visit. I had a friend staying in Bilbao and decided to stay there on my first days. Bilbao has this incradible Guggenheim Museum -  Museum of modern and contemporary art designed by a Canadian architect. First thing you think after seeing the museum is: whatever the architect thoung when designing the Museum, the result is just incredible. But there wasn't many people at the Museum, guess because Bilbao is kind of a small city. I remember during my Visa application at the Spain Embassy in Maputo they've asked more than 3 times, why am I planning to go to Bilbao? I actually planned to visit Bilbao first and then to Madrid and Barcelona.

I think I wouldn't mind staying in Bilbao much longer. The place is so peaceful and the food is cheap. Best place was in "Casco viejo". The next day of my arrival I was walking around and the Map showed Casco Viejo, didn't have any idea about the place. The meaning of Casco Viejo is "Old town or seven streets". Casco Viejo is the historical part of Bilbao with historical churches, the Mercado de la ribera and the best glasses of chiquitos of wines and pinchos. Pincho is a typically snack that you can find in Bars, Restaurants and they are made with slices of bread with diferent ingredients on top of each pincho. You can't miss the pinchos when going to Spain because they are really delicious. Before coming back home I went to the very popular shopping mall and market "El Corte Ingles" and bought  many ingredients for pinchos and took them all to Mozambique.

I had so much fun walking around Barcelona. Didn´t know anything about Gaudi, the most famous and popular Spanish catalan archited who's responsible for the most beautiful buildings I ever seen. Most of his works can be found in Barcelona like the Sagrada Familia as per picture bellow, the Magnum opus, Palacio Guell, Colegio Santa Maria de Jesus and more.

The Sagrada familia is still under construction and is known as the most admirable catholic building. I took a touristic bus at the "Plaza de Espana" and had long stops in most of the Gaudi architectures. I was really impressed with what I saw there - thousands of people admiring the building that is still to be finish. Not sure when will that construction ends as we are the ones paying for the construction : the tourist guy in the bus repeated that when the building had started one of the workers asked Gaudi when will they finish, cause it seems a huge building and different from what they´ve seen before. Antoni Gaudi has answered that this building is meant to be different than others because the owner of the building is someone very special and gave them unlimited time to finish. He was talking about God of course.  We wanted to get into the building but the line was huge and we also had to pay the entrance as that money will be used to help the Construction.

I also went to the Barceloneta - the beach. Uf, to cold to swim at that time, but of course as always there's always someone crazy and I saw few guys swimming. One of the evenings we went to a Bar to watch an african group that was performing. Me and my friend Laura had to stand and dance cause the show was really bad :-(. Maybe bad for me cause I am african and I know the real african performances but good for them.  I love dancing and both me and Laura decided to show them the real african dance. Laura is Canadian but stayied in Africa so she is also a great dancer.

As always there are good and bad experiences. We went to Barceloneta - the beach in Barcelona and we decided to have lunch there. The restaurants were expensive and the food tasted like fast food. The cola cola was 5 euros and the food wasn´t that good so next trip to Barcelona, no food at Barceloneta :-). Everything is art, take a look on what they do with the stones on the beach - just beautiful.

Hum, cant wait to visit Spain one more time and eat that delicius pinchos or Paellas and visit the beautiful spanish culture.

Warm hugs from Marciana
